DDOT SOUTH CAPITAL NEAR TERM IMPROVEMENTS

Scope of Work: The overall scope consisted of many facets of infrastructure upgrades. Anchor Construction Corporation was chosen for the critical task of upgrading the water and sewer capacity. This would ultimately include over 4000 ft of new water service and over 4800 ft of new sewer service. The purpose of these upgrades was not singularly for the new stadium but for the various mixed use buildings being built in conjunction with it. The stadium has itself created a mini building boom along First Street SE from Potomac to Eye Street. All of these new developments along with the demands of the stadium necessitated the infrastructure upgrades but the timetable was clearly defined by the Nationals opening day.

Complications-Solutions-Methods Used: This project was incredibly complicated for a variety of reasons and not the least of these were that so many contractors were all trying to work in the same area at one time. We all had jobs to do and we were all under the same time constraints. As with any older city, the drawings of existing conditions can be less than accurate and much of the job was redesigned as progressed. This is where having great superintendents and foremen becomes Anchor Construction Corporation's greatest asset. Along with our management team, the crews that worked on the stadium project worked to foresee the problems that Anchor would encounter so we could address them in a pro-active way and ultimately keep the project on schedule.

One great challenge that faced us, was how we could cross busy M St SE without impacting the commerce of the entire area. Another and potentially greater concern would be installing the sewer across M St and directly above the Navy Yard Metro Station, without disruption. For this challenge it was decided to employ a tunnel and casing method to minimize the risk to both Anchor Construction Corporation and Metro.

Anchor Construction Corporation works best when we work as a team and through our weekly internal progress meetings we consolidated our efforts and focused our energies on the task at hand.
